TUE Tuesdays: Dennis Mitchell: Booze, Sex and Testosterone
Dennis Mitchell had one of the greatest excuses ever when he tested positive for testosterone. The American who ran 9.91 and 20.09 for 100m and 200m respectively explained his positive sample by saying his levels were high as the previous night he had “five bottles of beer and sex with his wife at least four times . . . it was her birthday, the lady deserved a treat”. Mitchell claimed he was innocent insisting that his ratio of testosterone to epitestosterone was natural.
It was however nearly two times the current allowed limit. A USATF panel was convened and his story believed. International officials did not however believe his story. Mitchell served a two-year ban. Ten years later, during the BALCO scandal, Mitchell testified that his coach Trevor Graham, had given him banned drugs and that Graham had injected him with human growth hormone.
The American was later appointed to lead USA’s sprint teams at the I.A.A.F. World Relays in the Bahamas in March 2015. Read more about the reaction to his appointment here
