23 Years ago today: Derek Redmond’s Heartbreak

Derek Redmond posted the fastest time in the first round in the 400m at the Barcelona 1992 Olympics. He won his quarter final but it’s for his semi final that Redmond is remembered. Redmond twice held the British record, finally posting a time of 44.50 seconds. Redmond missed the 1988 Olympics, getting injured 10 minutes before his race. in 1992 he was in incredible form but tore his hamstring on the back straight. His father rushes from the stands and creates an iconic Olympic moment.

As with all things in life, Morgan Freeman makes it better

Redmond would never again represent his country at a major tournament and two years later he retired through injury. He did however represent his country in Basketball.

Ronan Duggan is an athlete, coach, athletics fan and, most importantly, was once named Bandon AFC's under-12 Player of the Year. He was once a promising athlete but is now a promising coach, teacher and part-time athletics writer/broadcaster. While an 800m runner himself, Ronan has coached everything from pole vault to 10km with varying levels of bluffing. He has regularly been threatening to do something for years but is yet to deliver. He is regarded as our expert on the American running scene, though has yet, to prove his knowledge in this realm.
