Mageean and Cullen come close to world standard

Ciara Mageean and Mary Cullen came close to running respective world championship qualifying standards in Heusden-Zolder at the KBC Nacht meeting last night.

Mageean finished 10th in the 1500m with a time of 4:08.32 and showed once again that she is an international class runner if she can avoid injury. The UCD athlete has been beset by injuries and is not long back in full training by all accounts. The world championship standard is 4:06.50 and should be well within her compass if she can stay injury free and get into some quality races.

Mary Cullen is another who, if she can stay injury free, can have an impact on the international stage. The North Sligo athlete had to settle for 12th in the 5,000m a season’s best of 15:26.46 having led the chasing pack for good portions of the race.

Con Houlihan once told me that tomorrow is now. In taking on this venture I’ve started to try and put his words into action.

I worked for Con from 2007 till his passing in 2012 taking down his copy and a whole lot more. I have a Con Houlihan section which will go in to more depth on that.

I’m a long-time contributor to the Irish Runner magazine and am also working for the Irish Examiner.
