The JTG Finish Line: With Johnny Dutch

Johnny Dutch is the second fastest 400m hurdler (48.13) in the world so far this year and winner of two most recent diamond leagues in his event (Eugene and Rome). We wanted to learn a bit more about Dutch as an athlete and as a person, so below he has been finishing our sentences. Keep track of his season by following him on twitter hereand check out his video at the bottom of the page which shows what life is like behind the scenes at the Rome diamond league.

THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING AN ATHLETE IS…

The opportunity to travel the world. I’m able to experience so many different cultures and environments which in turn amplifies my creativity behind the camera when I film. Competing internationally gives me the opportunity to capture unique visual images on my camera.

I REALISED I WANTED TO BE AN ATHLETE WHEN…

When I saw Michael Johnson win the 400 meter dash in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. I was too young to fully conceptualize the whole Olympic experience and what it would take to win a gold medal,  but I knew I wanted to run.

MY BEST FRIEND IN TRACK & FIELD IS…

The hurdle. My first hurdle coach would tell me “be one with the hurdle.” So we’ve become good friends through the years.

IN MY FREE TIME I LIKE TO…

Create and produce films. I’m consistently filming something, whether it’s a day at practice or an actual scene from a script I wrote. I started creating home movies when I was 16.

IF I WASN’T AN ATHLETE I WOULD BE…

A news correspondent for Entertainment tonight or Extra news. Actually, I’d still love to do that one day.

WHEN I STAND BEHIND MY BLOCKS  I’M THINKING…

Execute! Execute! Execute!

MY DREAM GOAL IN TRACK & FIELD IS…

To win Olympic gold medals and world championship medals.

ONE CHANGE I WOULD MAKE TO THE SPORT IS…

Allow one false start during major championships like the Olympics and world championships, only for the 100, 200, and short hurdle events. Who wants to wait another four years because of one bad start?

MY DREAM TRAINING PARTNER WOULD BE…

I’m training with him now, Bershawn ‘Batman’ Jackson. Training with him is definitely bringing the best out of me.

THE BEST PIECE OF COACHING ADVICE I EVER RECEIVED IS…

As cliche as it sounds, any coach that I’ve had has told me to “get up and keep going”. I’ve applied that to life off the track and it works, every single time. The only person keeping you down is yourself.
