English, Ó Lionáird and Crowe set for Hengelo FBK Games

Mark English opens up his outdoor season at the FBK Games in Hengelo where he will take on a top class men’s 800m with Andre Olivier and Marcin Lewandowski in the line-up. English has completed his medicine exams in UCD for the summer and will hope for a good showing. European Indoor champion Lewandowski looks like the early favourite but Denmark’s Andreas Bube should also feature along with the ever competitive Olivier.

Bube, who gets treatment from Ciaran McDonagh, has been training with Lewandowski on a number of training camps this year and will look for a strong showing.

Ciarán Ó Lionáird will look to improve on his season’s best of 3:41.04 in the men’s 1500m. The Leevale and Oregon Track Club athlete will be hoping for some consistency and putting some races back to back without any niggles.

Laura Crowe (An Riocht) is in the women’s 1,000m where Sifan Hassan and Susan Kuijken are looking to break the Dutch record of 2:35.21, held by Ellen van Langen since 1993.

Con Houlihan once told me that tomorrow is now. In taking on this venture I’ve started to try and put his words into action.

I worked for Con from 2007 till his passing in 2012 taking down his copy and a whole lot more. I have a Con Houlihan section which will go in to more depth on that.

I’m a long-time contributor to the Irish Runner magazine and am also working for the Irish Examiner.
