XC Season up and running as Marathon Monday looms

This week, it was all about the cross country as the season got into full swing with the Autumn Open Cross Country in the Phoenix Park.

Brendan O’Neill took victory in the men’s race and further down the mixed field, Fionnuala Britton showed her good form when unsurprisingly being first woman home by some distance. We discuss whether it was a good idea to run both races together, with our panel split firmly down the middle.

Looking ahead to the European Cross Country, we discuss who we think will be on the plane to Bulgaria in the respective categories, and whether AAI should bother bringing any American-based athletes home for the event.

We discuss the latest athletics transfer news, as a British coach took one of our hottest prospects under his wing. Finally, we look ahead to next Monday’s Dublin Marathon, where the best of Ireland will again take on international competition for this year’s crown.

Con Houlihan once told me that tomorrow is now. In taking on this venture I’ve started to try and put his words into action.

I worked for Con from 2007 till his passing in 2012 taking down his copy and a whole lot more. I have a Con Houlihan section which will go in to more depth on that.

I’m a long-time contributor to the Irish Runner magazine and am also working for the Irish Examiner.
