Sonia set for Super Saturday in Ballymote; young stars to kick off IMC season

Sonia O’Sullivan is set to be a special guest at the Ballymote 5km inter firms challenge today in Ballymote and she will be looking on to see can a relay attempt break her still-standing 2,000m world record.

Before the fun and games will be the sub 4 mile challenge which was won in style by Paul Robinson last year (you can watch the video highlight below). Robinson is currently altitude training in the French Pyrenees in Font Romeu and won’t be running this year. John Travers, who made much of the running last year, does return, however, and will be looking to match his 3:55 performance from last year.

Mark Christie is down to head the entries for the inter firms 5km and 2009 European bronze medallist, Mary Cullen, is also set to be in attendance.

Off the road and on to the track, the Irish Milers Club will host many of the stars of the future in their opening track and field meet of the season in Greystones. Among those on the start lists are Shane Fitzsimons, Kevin McGrath, Robert Tully, Karl Griffin, Ciara Neville, Nadia Power and Louise Shanahan.

Con Houlihan once told me that tomorrow is now. In taking on this venture I’ve started to try and put his words into action.

I worked for Con from 2007 till his passing in 2012 taking down his copy and a whole lot more. I have a Con Houlihan section which will go in to more depth on that.

I’m a long-time contributor to the Irish Runner magazine and am also working for the Irish Examiner.
