Treacy wins thrilling 3,000m at British Indoor Championships

Sara Treacy caused a stir in Sheffield when she edged victory on the line in the women’s 3,000m at the Sainsbury’s British Championships in Sheffield yesterday.

Treacy held off Emelia Gorecka on the line in 9:06.23 to 9:06.27 – both new personal bests. Jessica Judd finished third in 9:09.67. That was only half the story.

The women’s 3,000m was the last race on the programme and it didn’t disappoint. With a field that included Emelia Gorecka, making her indoor debut, Jessica Judd, Hannah England and Charlene Thomas, it promised to be a classic. And so it proved but it was Treacy that proved the surprise package.

The Dunboyne athlete, running for her British club Birchfield Harriers, was to the fore throughout, but looked to be struggling at one point in the final kilometre. Judd was looking menacing and with sub 2 minute 800m speed it looked like she would have the upper hand in the final 400m. Strength was to tell and it was between Treacy and Gorecka. 2011 world 1500m medallist, Hannah England, had been tailed off with 500m remaining.

A burst of speed with 200m remaining proved crucial as Treacy got a gap that Gorecka couldn’t bridge despite being only four hundredths of a second down at the line. Maria McCambridge who led in the opening stages finished 5th in 9:14.99 while Kerry O’Flaherty was 7th in 9:19.51.

STThere was no gold medal for Treacy who is coached by Bud Baldaro as she is Irish but made do with a bear which she showed off on twitter last night. Her training partner Alison Leonard won silver in the women’s 1500m behind Laura Muir.

Treacy will take up an invitation to run in the 3,000m at the Sainsbury’s Indoor Grand Prix on Saturday in an effort to get the Athletics Ireland European indoor standard of 9:00.00. She will then hope to go to day two of the GloHealth Irish Indoor Championships on Sunday and potentially run in the 1500m.

Con Houlihan once told me that tomorrow is now. In taking on this venture I’ve started to try and put his words into action.

I worked for Con from 2007 till his passing in 2012 taking down his copy and a whole lot more. I have a Con Houlihan section which will go in to more depth on that.

I’m a long-time contributor to the Irish Runner magazine and am also working for the Irish Examiner.
