Divine intervention in Ghent; Boston strikes the right balance
This week we look at our own Gerard O’Donnell’s breakthrough performance at the IFAM International Indoor athletics meeting where he went to number 3 on the Irish all-time 60m hurdles list – race video below.
Gerard ran 7.73 seconds to take the win. His pb was 8.23 seconds going into this indoor season and he explains to us where he made all the big improvements, overcoming injuries and the value of family support to achieve what seemed to be a fruitless dream. We also take a look back on some of the big breakthrough performances by athletes.
There were plenty of other interesting stories in Gent, most notably Ciara Everard falling into a frozen lake on her warm-up. Gerard fills us in on the blow by blow account of her icy mishap.
We reviewed all the action from the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, top junior performances at the Milton Keynes Cross Country Challenge and a host of other top performances.
Talking points this week are marijuana as a performance enhancer in distance races, running vocabulary that runners use and European indoor relay selection.
Finally we preview this weekend’s action including Bernard Lagat eyeing up Eamonn Coghlan’s O40 mile record and Declan Murray looking to break the Irish 1,000m record.
