Jingle Bells 5km set for cracking competition

The Donore Harriers Jingle Bells 5km road race (December 6th, 11am) is set to be a classic in the Phoenix Park with Ciara Mageean, Mary Cullen and Maria McCambridge set to do battle.

It will be a comeback of sorts for all three. Mary Cullen should be the favourite in her first race back from injury but will face stiff competition from Mageean and McCambridge.

It will be Mageean’s first race since the 5th Avenue Mile in New York and it will be interesting to see her endurance levels over 5km. She will be building towards an indoor season with the 3,000m at the European indoors her likely target.

McCambridge returns from her Dublin Marathon heroics and is bound to put in a good performance.

The men’s race should also provide some good competition with Mick Clohisey sharpening up for the European cross country championships in Samakov, Bulgaria next week. Brandon Hargreaves, John Coghlan, Mark Christie and John Travers are all slated to compete.

Con Houlihan once told me that tomorrow is now. In taking on this venture I’ve started to try and put his words into action.

I worked for Con from 2007 till his passing in 2012 taking down his copy and a whole lot more. I have a Con Houlihan section which will go in to more depth on that.

I’m a long-time contributor to the Irish Runner magazine and am also working for the Irish Examiner.
