Gemma looking to Steel the show as stars descend at Great Edinburgh Cross Country

Gemma Steel will be looking to defend her title today at the Great Edinburgh Cross Country in Holyrood Park today with Fionnuala Britton one of her most likeliest challengers.

Steel goes in as favourite having won the European Cross Country title last month. Emelia Gorecka and Fionnuala Britton will be looking to usurp her but it will be a tough challenge.

The women’s 6,000m race sees the usual team competition between USA, Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Team Europe.

The men’s 8,000m race will see USA’s Chris Derrick start out as favourite while Asbel Kiprop returns once again to the men’s 4km short course race. Garrett Heath caused a surprise when he won the 4km last year and he will be looking for a repeat performance.

There will be a new event added to the programme this year with a novel mixed 2 by 1km relay. Live coverage will be on BBC1 from 13:00-14:35.

Con Houlihan once told me that tomorrow is now. In taking on this venture I’ve started to try and put his words into action.

I worked for Con from 2007 till his passing in 2012 taking down his copy and a whole lot more. I have a Con Houlihan section which will go in to more depth on that.

I’m a long-time contributor to the Irish Runner magazine and am also working for the Irish Examiner.
