Throwback Thursday: Derval’s agonising fourth

Derval O Rourke, 3 time Olympian, World Indoor Champion and multiple European medalist missed out on a world medal by just a tenth of a second in 2009. After a disappointing performance in 2008, Derval would take on 5 Olympic finalists in Berlin and also put the great Sally Pearson back into 5th.

O Rourke showcased her championship pedigree by setting a season’s best in each round culminating in an Irish record in the final. Derval would  go on to take two hundreds off it in Barcelona the following year.

He was once a promising athlete but is now a promising coach, teacher and part-time athletics writer/broadcaster. While an 800m runner himself, Ronan has coached everything from pole vault to 10km with varying levels of bluffing. He has regularly been threatening to do something for years but is yet to deliver. He is regarded as our expert on the American running scene, though has yet, to prove his knowledge in this realm.
